You're at the end of your rope. There's always something on TV, but you can't find anything that catches your interest. You've tried listening to music on Spotify, but it turns out you like more than one genre of song and it's driving you mad! You need to get out of the house, but all of your friends are busy with work or studying for exams; they offer to make some popcorn and watch Netflix with you instead. What do you do? Chances are that if this is happening to you then maybe what's causing this dilemma is that you just need a break from the screens altogether. If you find yourself constantly reaching for the remote and feel like you can't keep up with all of the new shows and series popping up (especially if your interests tend to lean toward the niche) then maybe it's time to step away from media consumption. Anyone who has ever tried to go on a social media hiatus will know that it is much easier said than done. Instagram and Twitter and Facebook and Tumblr and Youtube hold an incredible amount of power in our society; we rely on them for news, we use them to connect with friends, we even rely on them if we want to be entertained. It's no wonder that walking away from these mediums feels more like walking away from our own lives. So how should we combat this problem? I have a confession to make: I was one of those people. For years, I'd been glued to my phone, tablet or computer screen. Wired into the internet, I spent my days scrolling through Facebook and Instagram looking at pictures of friends' vacations, scrolling through Reddit while listening to music on YouTube while watching 'Game Of Thrones'. It was a double life. One side of me would see the world from a different perspective if only for a few minutes a day. The other side of me would spend entire days alone in their own personal prison; locked away from friends and family. And then one day it happened: I cracked. I discovered that my phone didn't just give me constant access to the internet, but to the entire world. I was shocked by this sudden shift in lifestyle, but I could no longer ignore it. I had to stop using media so heavily because it was affecting the way I was living my own life. Is there even a way to go back? I quickly realised that there isn't - you can't return to a past that never existed. However, you can take small steps towards the future, where you are able to spend more time actively inhabiting your own world without being completely engulfed by work and schoolwork. But how can you be more present? The first step is to get out of the house for a while. There are plenty of things that can make this easier, from going for a walk in nature to taking a yoga class. Avoiding technology is already easier because it's not always accessible, but actively staying away from your phone will increase the time you have available to spend being in reality. You may find that you have more time to do things that really matter, like spending time with the people who mean the most to you or looking after yourself by sleeping well and eating healthily. cfa1e77820
